Teaching Elementary General Music

Experience in an elementary general music setting is a required by the State of Florida for anyone wishing to become a Florida-certified music teacher. At the University of Miami, prospective music educators must take at least one semester of instruction in elementary methods and complete at least 10 hours of field teaching in a school placement, dictated by the university.

I took MED 642 Teaching General Music at the University of Miami in Fall 2022 with Dr. Carlos Abril. Together with a partner, as per the requirements of the course, we co-created and delivered musical lessons and a three-lesson curriculum unit on Blues music to 3rd Grade students at Sweetwater Elementary School in Sweetwater, FL, under the mentorship of Mr. Joshua Argueta.

On this page you will find an independently created curriculum unit and respective scope and sequence for 5th Grade general music, the design of which has been greatly informed by my experiences in MED 642 and at Sweetwater Elementary School.

5th Grade Curriculum Unit Sample (2022)

The following curriculum unit with scope and sequence was created for the purpose of educating 5th Grade general music students on the sounds and styles of the early history of jazz. Included in this unit is a set of lesson plan samples for each step of learning in the sequence.
