Welcome to my page for teaching instrumental music! On this page you will find a variety of projects, resources, and experiences I have had and created during my time as a student in the Frost School of Music's music education program, including sample lesson/rehearsal plans (all of which were implemented into real classrooms in the Spring of 2024), sample assessment tools, a classroom management plan and philosophy, and several academic projects. In addition, there are also links to sample teaching videos from moments in the classroom. Please click on each to see more.
The following rehearsals plans were written for and implemented with various ensembles of the Miami Arts Studio 6-12 @ Zelda Glazer in Miami, FL during my time student teaching under Erich S. Rivero. They are designed to be representative of various strategies for implementing rehearsal techniques as well as assessing student performance. Each lesson plan includes associated State and National standards for music education.
The two assessment tools below were projects created for the MED764 Music Assessment course at the University of Miami in Fall 2023. The purpose of these projects was to gain both practice and insight about the complexity in creating effective tests whose measurements of student knowledge and/or skill are both reliable and valid.
The Cognitive Assessment Tool features a written test that was created, administered, and analysed on the basis of student understanding of the stated content area. The Affective Assessment Tool features a Likest-Scale evaluation that aims to measure student opinion on the stated topic. The Affective assessment was not administered to real students. Both projects involved a reflection on the test creation process and plans for future revision and/or implementation.
Below is a variety of projects created during my time as a student at the University of Miami.
1. Sample Repertoire Analysis: created for the MED 643 Teaching Instrumental Music course at the University of Miami. This project involves a score study, series of lesson plans, and collection of assessment tools for delivering a unit of learning based on Frank Ticheli's Rest for band.
2. Sample UDL Plan: created for the MED 648 Music for Special Learners course at the University of Miami. This project involves the analysis and creation of a Universal Design plan for a fictional student with a variety of learning challenges. It includes weekly plans, both for the student and for UDL in general, for meaningful participating in a unit of learning.
3. Sample Grading Policy: created for the MED 764 Music Assessment Course at the University of Miami. It involves a detailed explanation of grading procedures for a fictional high school band program.
In this video, I work with the Symphonic Band (intermediate concert band) at Miami Arts Studio 6-12 @ Zelda Glazer in learning to develop their interpretation of a piece of music.
In this video, I work with the Symphonic Band (intermediate concert band) at Miami Arts Studio 6-12 @Zelda Glazer to dissect a tricky rhythm in their music. Together, we break down and rebuild the rhythm before adding pitch. The intent was for students to engage with a scaffolded sequence that they can use on their own to learn how to count, and then play, challenging rhythms.
