My interest in teaching marching band began during my time in the Diamond Bands at Temple University. My first teaching experiences occurred there as Trumpet Section Leader in 2019 and then as Drum Major in 2020 and 2021. Navigating the COVID-19 pandemic in a new position of authority gave me a unique perspective on what it meant to lead in times where empathy, integrity, and teamwork were more important than ever. It was a great responsibility that taught me a lot. I have since spent much time furthering and practicing my teaching, building on those initial concepts of modeling respect and empathy, trying especially to be more thoughtful about how people receive and process instruction and how that perception influences their learning experience.
Most recently, I have furthered my marching band teaching experience as Head Graduate Teaching Assistant with the University of Miami Frost Band of the Hour. In the future, I see myself becoming the Director of Athletic Bands in a D1 program where I can continue to inspire the next generation of music and marching band enthusiasts.
This page serves as a mini-portfolio representing some of my experiences teaching marching band. Here, you will find sample plans and schedules I have created and contributed to that have been executed by two different collegiate programs. Additionally, please continue scrolling to view sample videos and see photos of highlighted experiences of mine with both the Temple University Diamond Marching Band and the University of Miami Frost Band of the Hour. Thank you for your interest in my experiences!
The following instructional sequence was created for a project on curriculum design completed in Fall 2022 for the MED 762 Music Learning & Curriculum course at the University of Miami. It provides a general outline of one academic year in marching band and associated athletic band activities and their application to the Florida State Music Standards. For the purposes of the course assignment, the sequence is laid out in "units" and "chapters," however, in practicality, this simply provides the framework for the content needed for teaching students to become stronger band members, stronger leaders, and thus better people.
Some parts of the sequence are not necessarily intended to be executed in the exact order presented in the document; rather, the learning of certain skills, such as those involving practicing marching techniques, playing techniques, and leadership, will happen concurrently and be developed continuously throughout the season. Some "units," such as "unit" 10, are intended for instruction in a Marching Band Techniques-style course rather than instruction to be delivered to all students during a rehearsal.
This sequence was created with high school band members in mind but has been inspired by my experiences with receiving and delivering college-level marching band instruction. A scope and sequence is not included in the sample.
Below are examples of schedules I have created, either independently or as a part of a team, that have been executed by college marching band programs. Please see the text for a short description of the attached PDFs.
